The Lookout
The Lookout was historically used as a viewing point by fishermen's wives waiting for boats to come in. As it's name implies, it is dramatically located - perched on an exposed site between a rocky cliff edge and spectacular sea views.
Entering between the natural stone cliff and the sharp limestone facade highlights the material quality of the Lookout. Throughout the building, there is a focus on balancing the natural and man-made elements. A continuity of natural stone finishes between exterior and interior contrast and support the lighter glass and steel window elements and stairs, all the while detailed to very low energy standards.
The house is designed to create a natural flow between inside and outside, with a number of interconnected terraces emerging from internal spaces. Panoramic sea views create a striking natural backdrop to each room, and openings are detailed to give framed views of the lighthouse to the south, the cove to the west and the village to the east.
Deeply embedded within the landscape, the house acts as a sheltered viewpoint from the exposed conditions of the site, embodying the richness of its rugged surroundings as well as the calming beauty of the sea. Above all it creates a sociable space for a family to share, to enjoy and welcome others.
